The Maryland State Police (MSP) have recently issued warnings about a dangerous email scam specifically targeting Maryland residents. From August through September, the MSP Financial Crimes Unit has received multiple reports of internet-based schemes involving Gmail accounts.

What’s Happening:
According to the MSP, scammers are using Gmail to send threatening emails to potential victims, often including a photograph of their residences sourced from Google Maps. The emails demand payments through Bitcoin, threatening that personal information has been stolen and will be used against the victim if they don’t comply.

In some cases, scammers falsely accuse victims of viewing inappropriate content, trying to extort money by threatening to expose them unless a payment is made through Bitcoin.

MSP’s Warning:

• Be cautious with emails requesting personal information or demanding immediate action.
• Do not share personal data, especially in response to unsolicited emails.
• Think rationally: Scammers rely on fear tactics to make you act impulsively.
• Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments—they could be part of a phishing attempt.

The MSP advises residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to their local police or the nearest MSP barrack.
